The San Juan River and three of its major tributaries (the Piedra River, Rio Blanco and Navajo River) have their headwaters in the adjacent San Juan Valley and cut through the county flowing in a generally southwest direction.

As of 1998, Archuleta County officials estimate the population of the county at 9,000. The Planning Office conservatively projects that by 2010 the county population will reach at least 20,000. 85% of the county's population live within a 10 mile radius of the Town of Pagosa Springs.
